Week 1 of 52: "Like U Don't Love U (Noams Remix)" by Andi Rella

“Like U Don't Love U” was the last song written for the Tequila Baby EP, a sexy Pop/Rnb project, with an early 2000's flair. The song was written and performed by Andi Rella and Produced by Brandon Merluccio. Its somewhat harsh lyrics outline the idea of sticking around in a relationship for a little longer than you should. It's about the moment we realize we enjoy this persons company, but they aren't necessarily "The One".

I heard the song when it came out and immediately KNEW I had to remix it! My only issue was that the song was already SO good so how could I balance bringing out the great elements of the track while bringing in a totally different style!

I started by resampling the vocals and trying to create a cool little melody, and this is what came out:

And here is the same loop (which became the backbone of the song) without any FX just to show how FX can totally change the feeling of a sample:

The vocals were pristine so all I did was mix them to fit better within the context of the song. Furthermore, the first verse there’s also the addition of various drums to bring a little extra rhythm as well as some chords that take the place of the guitar driven original:

At this time I was OBSESSED with big CHONKY basses and delayed drops so I had to use both in this song. The chonky basses almost coming out of nowhere for the second and third bars of each half of the drop. I’ve always been obsessed with taking people by surprise as well as just creating unnatural sequences such as how EVERYTHING cuts out for most of the chonky bass hits opening up space for it to be the complete center of attention with no distractions. I feel like it brings a contrast of the complicated nature of the drop, while also creating moments of simplicity where one thing can take center stage, even if that is a chonky distorted bass. XD

Some other sounds from the drop are a bass pluck that adds some movement to various sections, a distorted vocal loop that laid the melodic backbone for the drop, and a synth line inspired by that same loop which brought more of a texture/distinct melody to the second half. Soon I’ll be making a breakdown video for this song where I go in-depth but for now, this is the overview.

Andi Rella is an amazing artist and has so many awesome songs so give her a listen using this link! Big thanks to Brandon Merluccio for producing such a bop of a track, Andrew Yanchyshyn for consulting on the mix, and Daksh Bhatia, aka DB Music, for mastering this track to PERFECTION!
